Domestic violence is one of the problems that nobody talks about in Samtskhe-Javakheti, a region in southern Georgia with a sizeable Armenian population. A traditional, patriarchal society brushes it under the carpet, as it is a private matter, people say, and even the police should stay away - regardless of the high price women pay for a silence they themselves often perpetuate. For fear - fear that denouncing their husbands and fathers - would put in danger their children and siblings, fear that beatings would increase or lead to something worse, and shame to admit the violence to their own parents.
