We are happy to announce that Salome Apkhazishvili, a Chai Khana contributing writer and the head of our Media Literacy programme, will be participating in two conferences this week: World Communication Association Conference and Nation Association for Media Literacy Conference 2021!

Salome will discuss her article, which was recently published by Chai Khana : Between satire and censorship: Political cartoons in the South Caucasus.
The beginning of the twentieth century brought big changes to Tsarist Russia. The monarchy fell, creating a fruitful soil for small nations to reclaim their independence. Among many forms of liberation movements, visual storytelling became a primary weapon for mass-mobilization. Diving into the countries’ national archives, Salome Apkhazishvili discusses what makes political caricatures a national weapon. She also discusses the legacy of political caricaturing in today’s world of memes.
Nation Association for Media Literacy Conference 2021 (July 18th, EDT 3:30PM)
Roundtable session: The challenges of teaching critical thinking and student agency
Salome Apkhazishvili will attend the conference as the head of Chai Khana’s Media Literacy programme, Chai Khana Media.code. The media and digital literacy program is open for Abkhaz, Georgian, and Ossetian youth as well as those who want to participate as mentors.This virtual program aims to develop digital communication and production skills, an essential asset to succeed professionally and personally in this time and age.
