We are happy to announce that Salome Apkhazishvili, a Chai Khana contributing writer and the head of our Media Literacy programme, will be participating in two conferences this week: World Communication Association Conference  and Nation Association for Media Literacy Conference 2021!

World Communication Association Conference (July 16th, US Central: 6:30PM)

Panel discussion : “The Stories We Tell: Oral Histories, Political Caricature, and Journalism”

HiSTORYTELLING – political caricatures from the Republic of Georgia (1900-1921ss)

Salome will discuss her article, which was recently published by Chai Khana : Between satire and censorship: Political cartoons in the South Caucasus.

The beginning of the twentieth century brought big changes to Tsarist Russia. The monarchy fell, creating a fruitful soil for small nations to reclaim their independence. Among many forms of liberation movements, visual storytelling became a primary weapon for mass-mobilization. Diving into the countries’ national archives, Salome Apkhazishvili discusses what makes political caricatures a national weapon. She also discusses the legacy of political caricaturing in today’s world of memes.
