Woman of Talish
On April 2, 2016, a four day war broke out in Nagorno Karabakh, a disputed region, contested by Armenia and Azerbaijan. It was the bloodiest fighting since the 1994 ceasefire was signed. More than 200 people died on both sides of the conflict during the four days of fighting. Talish, a village close to the line of contact, was heavily bombed. Azerbaijani armed forces entered the village, forcing residents to flee their homes. About 50 families were temporarily settled in Alashan, a former resort town, where they have stayed for the past three and a half years. The Nagorno Karabakh government established a new school in the area and installed the necessary facilities for the families staying there. While more than 50 houses have been built and repaired in Talish, residents are afraid to go back home out of fears that the Azerbaijani armed forces could target the village again.
