This area in Georgia is almost completely Muslim-populated. The Kist community, which formed here over two centuries ago, manages to strictly keep its mentality and national consciousness, at the same time trying to follow all the developments of Georgia.

Architectural traditions of Mestia, a highland townlet in the historic center of Georgia’s mountainous region Svaneti, have evolved during centuries. However over the last ten years, an active renovation process has strongly influenced its appearance and identity. Dozens of new buildings were constructed, including pieces of contemporary architecture. Although the local community does not openly oppose it, the renovation is quite controversial to them.

In the Flower Bazaar close to the subway station of “Samgori,” working days start at midnight. From 2 o'clock a.m. until 10 o'clock a.m. numerous people come to sell and buy different kinds of flowers in the market. The sellers break every night just to earn their livelihoods. They go to sleep at dawn. They need to stay sober for the next working night.

Conflict and rapid socio-political change over the last two decades has significantly affected lives in Georgia’s rural communities. Marina Kokoeva, an independent member of the local council, is responsible for several ethnic Ossetian villages located in a remote eastern province of Georgia. In Georgia, 53 per cent of voters are women. Despite these, women are seriously under-represented in local government bodies. According to the results of the 2014 local elections, only 11 per cent of deputies nationwide are women. There are local councils where women are not represented at all.
