Modern Mestia - An Architectural Collision

Architectural traditions of Mestia, a highland townlet in the historic center of Georgia’s mountainous region Svaneti, have evolved during centuries. However over the last ten years, an active renovation process has strongly influenced its appearance and identity. Dozens of new buildings were constructed, including pieces of contemporary architecture. Although the local community does not openly oppose it, the renovation is quite controversial to them.
