Looking for home

12.02.24

Natig, a cinematographer living in Baku, decided to move to Canada with his wife and two children. After the family was refused a visa twice, however, his wife Ulkar suggested buying an apartment with the money her mother had offered and a loan from the bank instead of spending more time and resources on a third visa application.

But as they look for a home, they encounter several difficulties despite their middle-class income. The apartment prices in Baku are higher than they anticipated. It's hard even to imagine affording an apartment that is centrally located or recently remodeled. Even though both Natig and Ulkar work, the mortgage loans banks offer based on their salaries are insufficient. In fact, once they purchase an apartment their quality of life will decrease as most of their income will go toward the monthly mortgage payment.

Ulkar only wants a comfortable life for herself and her two children–and owning a home is central to her mind. But Natig oscillates between conflicting thoughts about an apartment: buying one will make it more difficult for them to move to Canada as it will create more ties to the country–however, owning property in his name will make it easier to obtain a visa.

As the film follows this young family's journey to buy an apartment, it reveals the challenges of becoming a homeowner in Baku.
