Chronicles of May

The chronicles of May 2024, captured through the lens of three photographers, shows examples of resistance, solidarity, and personal courage demonstrated by the citizens of Georgia against the "Russian law."

One year ago, on May 28, 2024, the Parliament of Georgia overrode the President’s veto on the draft law “On the Transparency of Foreign Influence” and enacted it into law. People protested this decision continuously in Tbilisi and other major cities across Georgia. A large number of university students and lecturers went on strike as a sign of protest.

Prior to the law's adoption, on April 30 and May 1, peaceful protesters were forcefully removed. Police used water cannons and tear gas to break up the demonstrations. Various television channels broadcast live coverage of how law enforcement officers treated the demonstrators. Women, children, and journalists were among the victims.

Throughout the night, representatives of non-governmental organizations searched detention facilities for those who had been arrested. More than ten human rights organizations described the crackdown as follows:

“It was illegitimate and disproportionate; the use of physical force amounted to torture, inhuman and degrading treatment. The practice of administrative detention once again became a tool for excessively restricting freedom of assembly.”

This photo project brings together the perspectives of three photographers — Tako Robakidze, Leli Blagonravova, and Mariam Giunashvili — offering a stark reminder of the daily reality in a country entangled in protest and resistance.

Citizens are trying to convince the police officers of the necessity of going on strike.

"I look them in the eyes and try to see which one might hold back from using force," says one of the protesters.
